David Howman expresses his attitude to anti-doping policies in some sports organizations. While the director general of the WADA seems to be happy with jobs of certain sports organizations, he says that anti-doping programs in other leagues/teams are not appropriate.
For example, David Howman praises the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for its anti-doping system. The director general of the WADA affirms that anti-doping program is suitable in tennis.
But when it comes to the National Basketball Association (NBA), it doesn’t want to adopt its anti-doping system to that of the WADA. It doesn’t agree to add several new drug tests in order to catch those that administer steroids and/or other banned medications. That’s why the director general of the WADA confirms that the anti-doping program of the NBA is not good enough to catch those that dope. He confirms that the NBA should add more complicated new methods as well.
The director general of the WADA claims that drug tests conducted in tennis are of high quality. But there is a defect in tennis’ anti-doping policy. Numerous tests take place during competitions. But few tests are conducted out-of-competition. That’s why ITF’s anti-doping policy is also criticized.
Undoubtedly, nobody can say that anti-doping system of ITF is perfect. It has several lacks too. But it is quite adequate.
Thus, you should not believe that tennis is clean from doping totally. Some tennis players are likely to apply steroids and/or related products. But it is not as tainted, as certain other sports.
Just one tennis player was suspended for administration of prohibited medicines. However it seems to prove that tennis is not tainted, it is necessary to take into account that there are several ways to avoid detection. As you probably know, the famous cyclist Lance Armstrong used steroids and other related preparations and avoided detection much time. Couldn’t tennis players dope and use the same methods?
