If an athlete uses steroids in the UK, he/she doesn’t commit any crime under laws of this country

Officials of the British government will be not capable to stop sportspersons importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 Olympics. However application of steroids is forbidden in sports, personal intake of these drugs is legal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is considered to be illegal in this country. Thus, if a person wants to import quantity of anabolic steroids which is evidentially large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympic Games took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries changed legislation related to import and intake of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t want to modify steroid legislation for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ironically, although the British government doesn’t desire to make personal administration of steroids criminal, Britain athletes are banned for lifetime, if they utilize anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, athletes who administer banned preparations are banned for 2 years.
The Olympic minister Hugh Robertson notes that it is needed to have a universal law connected with sentencing. He insists on at least 4 years or even longer.  However this minister is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh punishment. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, claims that several sanctions should be softened.
Hugh Robertson realizes that there are different opinions in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask Andy Parkinson to resign.
The spokesperson for the minister has noticed that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she arrives to London. But the amount of steroids should confirm that he/she possesses them just for personal usage. The spokesperson has noted that it is not criminal for an athlete to administer steroids under laws of the UK but if any sportsperson is caught using forbidden drugs, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD claimed that they would collaborate with border control officers. Information about athletes will be used by anti-doping officials.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
